Double Pole Isolators / Isolation Switch
We are one of a limited number of contractors in the North West who has authorisation to temporarily de-energise an incoming supply at the cut out to allow us to install an isolation switch otherwise known as a double pole isolator.
Due to this authorisation our engineers have been provided by the DNO with custom made sealing pliers which each have an individual identification number. This identification number along with the sealing pliers are assigned to an individual engineer. This is to to ensure that only contractors with the proper authorisation are able to carry out these works and so the DNO can easily identify which authorised person has completed the works.

What's an isolation switch?
An isolation switch (also known as a 'double-pole isolator') is a piece of equipment which can be installed on a metering supply that will allow the supply to be de-energised post-meter. The isolation switch should be fitted after the meter but before the consumer unit.
What's the purpose of an isolation switch?
An isolation switch is designed to act as a circuit breaker on the mains electrical supply, so that any electrical work that needs to take place within a property can be completed safely. It also negates the need for an authorised engineer to attend the property to de-energise the cut out (and re-energise afterwards) so that any internal electrical work can take place.
What does an isolation switch look like?
The isolation switch is located on the right of the photo above. When the switch is turned off, there would be no power after the isolation switch, which in turn would allow an electrician to complete any maintenance work or repairs on the member's internal electrical set up.
Who's responsible for installing an isolation switch?
An isolation switch needs to be installed by a specially trained and approved electrician who either works for the supplier or who has been granted authorisation from the DNO. With this authorisation a custom made pair of sealing pliers with an individual identification number is provided. This is because the supply would need to be de-energised via the cut out and without proper authorisation and additional training electricians are not permitted to work on the cut out.
We at Main Electrical Contractors Ltd are one of a limited number of contractors in the North West with electricians who have undergone the specialist training, received the appropriate authorisation and each have their own independently identifiable pair of sealing pliers supplied by the DNO (distribution network operator). This allows us to temporarily de-energise (then re-energise) the in-coming supply.
